這門課是開給中文系國際學士班一年級的學生，希望能夠引導這些外籍學生有系統地認識漢語、掌握漢語。課上將討論下列多項主題：漢語音韻系統、漢語構詞系統、漢語語法系統、漢語近義詞比較、漢語虛詞用法、漢語語義學、漢語書面語和口語等。原則上每週都有一個特定的主題（詳見每週進度），沒有固定教科書，採用教師自編講義。課上將先簡明扼要地說明該語言現象，然後安排學生進行各式課堂練習，並配合一定的課後作業。希望透過這樣的方式，學生能夠切實理解所學，並將習得觀念運用於日常語言分析，培養出一定的語言觀察力和警覺性。

This class is designed for international freshmen of the Department of Chinese Literature, and they are expected to understand and grasp the essentials of Chinese systematically through this class. We shall discuss the following topics of Chinese: the phonological system, the word formation system, syntax, near synonyms comparison, functional word analysis, semantics, written and oral Chinese etc. Basically there will be one topic for each week (see the syllabus below), and we shall use handouts of my own as texts, without specific textbooks. The class proceeds by sketching the linguistic phenomen, followed by various kinds of in-class practices, and finally assigns a certain amount of home assignments to work with. In this way, the student shall be equipped with rigid knowledge of Chinese linguistics, will also be able to analyze everyday language by the acquired concepts, and shall observe language more acutely.
